eNom, Inc. (www.enom.com), one of the world’s largest Internet domain name registrars, announced that it has been acquired by Demand Media, Inc., a new company headed by former MySpace.com chairman, and former CEO of Intermix Media, Richard Rosenblatt. Los Angeles-based Demand Media will broaden eNom’s offerings by developing proprietary content tools and technologies, as well as new online advertising opportunities for eNom’s clients.
eNom is the third-largest domain registrar with more than 6.4 million
names under management. What is less widely known is that eNom is also the world’s fifth-largest web hosting provider as measured by active sites - hostnames that contain content and thus are likely to be developed web sites generating hosting revenue each month. eNom hosts nearly 750,000 active sites, offering shared hosting plans priced at $7.80 a month.
The deal demonstrates that Wall Street and major corporation are watching the domain business closely in search of opportunities. “Media companies and advertising networks are now recognizing the central role a domain name plays in bringing users to Internet properties,” said Paul Stahura, eNom founder and CEO, who will become president and COO of Demand Media.
With eNom’s growing portfolio of 150,000 domain names bringing in traffic, there is going to be a huge need for content for these pages. To make this manageable, Rosenblatt is planning to rely heavily on user-generated content. Ideally this will follow a model similar to that of MySpace.com, with a large community of users contributing everything from texts to photos.
Demand Media’s domain monetization plans together with eNom’s solid registrar and web hosting business is a potentially very powerful combination. This union could well repeat the success of MySpace.com. In the long run, parked ad pages as we know them today could be a thing of the past, replaced instead by ad-sponsored portals to free content supported by a large community.

OpenDNS is a new start up that wants users to redirect web traffic through its DNS nameservers, where an unusually large cache and an aggregated list of sites deemed guilty of phishing will make our web surfing faster and safer.
OpenDNS makes the Internet experience safer, faster and smarter for you and everyone using your network.
1. OpenDNS is safer
OpenDNS can identify and stop sites trying to phish (steal) your personal information or money. The OpenDNS phishing protection works with all operating systems and browsers, and complements any other security measures already in use, such as a
firewall and anti-virus software.
2. OpenDNS is faster
Most DNS servers on the Internet are slow. Your computer uses DNS every time you visit a website or send an email, so you want DNS to be blazing fast. Two things make DNS really fast: a big cache and a good network. OpenDNS has both.
Not to brag, but OpenDNS caches are really big. The bigger and better the cache, the fewer steps in the process, and the faster the Internet experience. Making the OpenDNS caches really big is part of how OpenDNS makes the Internet faster. Speed really matters. You make hundreds of DNS queries a day and every delay adds up. OpenDNS built its network caches at the major intersections of the Internet. This results in an increase in performance.
3. OpenDNS is smarter
We all make speling mistakes. OpenDNS makes corrections for common spelling mistakes, on the fly. That means when you are typing fast and type yahoo.cmo instead of yahoo.com you still get there. No annoying pop-ups or evil spyware installed because you made a typo. Things just work.
Other benefits of OpenDNS
OpenDNS service is FREE. OpenDNS makes money by serving clearly labeled advertisements on search results pages where we cannot resolve your intent (i.e., not a known typo). There is no software to install, so no switching cost and no lock-in. OpenDNS is easy to start using.

Odeo released a new service today called Twttr, which is a sort of “group send†SMS service. Each person controls their own network of friends. When any of them send a text message to “40404,†all of his or her friends see the message via sms. Users can also post and view messages on the Twttr website, turn off text messages from certain people, turn off messages altogether, etc. There is also a status widget available that can be placed on a website.
Twttr is a text messaging service based on the idea that everyone and everything has a status. Your status right now is “reading about Twttr“. Twttr keeps you connected to your friends by subscribing to their status. Twttr works best from your cell phone when you are out and about in the world, but you can follow along on the web too.
