The One Million Masterpiece: Be a Part of Global Effort to Create a Masterpiece

by admin on January 3, 2007

theonemillionmasterpiece_logo.pngHow can we create a true snapshot of our global society, and sum up its diversity in one single picture? Simple. Get together one million ordinary people from all around the world, and get them to work on the picture together in the world’s largest ever artistic collaboration. A collaboration where everyone is equal, where all outcomes are valid, and at the same time, raise funds for charities. This is, and has always been, The One Million Masterpiece‘s goal.

The One Million Masterpiece is a web2.0 global online collaboration to create the ultimate art, a global masterpiece. You are asked to draw a small square image using software on its website. You don’t need to be an artist or be able to draw – you can draw patterns, write words, doodle, or whatever you want to. Your image will be one of one million images that will make up the entire picture, The One Million Masterpiece. Feel free to make your own picture or make picture that fits in with the surrounding pieces. You can change your image at any time if you don’t feel happy with it, and you can exchange messages with your fellow artists using The One Million Masterpiece community pages. By joining the project, you can also make a very small donation to one of The One Million Masterpiece‘s five partner charities, Save The Children, Oxfam, ActionAid, The World Cancer Research Fund and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). These international charities work throughout the world to tackle issues which affect the entire global community. The One Million Masterpiece hopes to raise funds for £3.5 million / $6.5 million / €5 million. Check out my very own created picture below (Never knew I had it in me).

Overall, The One Million Masterpiece has an easy to use interface and design. The drawing tool is very easy to use, and the feeling of being part of something larger is nothing more than satisfying. Nobody knows what will happen when one million people create a single work of art because nothing like it has ever been tried before. Will the result be a crazy patchwork of individual images? Will some larger picture emerge from the chaos? We’ll find out in July 11th 2007!
