SwitchDiscs: Free CDs in Abundance

SwitchDiscs LogoEver wonder what to do to all those old music CDs and DVDs that you no longer listen or watch, yet is cluttering your storage space? Or maybe you want to play that video game so badly but have not enough to buy a new one? SwitchDiscs can provide you with all of those and more.

SwitchDiscs is a new and exciting way for people to switch their old DVDs, CDs and video games to get the ones they want, for free. Best of all, it is a free service. You do not need to pay a single cent out of it (well, maybe just for the shipping charges).

SwitchDiscs homepage.

The system lets you trade DVDs, CDs, and games. Start by building two lists: a “My Discs” list of media you’d like to trade away, and a “Wish list” for things you want. As you add items to the SwitchDiscs system, they become available to others. When someone requests an item you have, you mail it to the person, and for that you get SwitchBucs—credits you can use to get something you want from other users in the system.

As with the competing Peerflix movie-trading service, the beauty of SwitchDiscs is that you’re trading with the entire pool of SwitchDiscs users—you’re not trading one-to-one. The person who requests your Raging Bull DVD might not have anything you want. But chances are that someone using the service has a movie you haven’t seen yet. You accrue SwitchBucs by sending out discs and can spend them by requesting discs you want.

The service is still in its infancy with help and support coming only from its fan based forums. However, everything is a pretty simple click-and-go. You find items you want by clicking on an appropriate category—DVDs, CDs, or Games—and scrolling through the available titles. There are two main buttons for each title: Switch Now, which lets you do the exchange, and Buy Now, which lets you purchase the item from Amazon.com.
