GPokr: A Multiplayer AJAX Poker Application

by admin on July 25, 2006

Ryan Dewsbury has written a multiplayer AJAX poker application written with GWT called GPokr. GPokr plays No Limit Texas Holdem poker with unlimited refills of $1,500, and each players will try to have the biggest chip stack at the end of the month. The top players will then receive some sort of trophy on their profiles at the end of the month (yet to be determined, this is the first month), and everyone starts the new month with $1500 chips.
GPokr is pretty neat for a Beta. The front end is written with Java which the google web toolkit compiles to javascript. This is an impressive task that GWT does and so far, even though the toolkit is beta, seems seamless. The front end talks to a java servlet on the backend through an RPC layer on top of XMLHttpRequest. The server sends events back to the clients through the same RPC mechanism so that the players at the table always have an updated rendering.

So, watch out for GPokr, Party Poker! :)
